You can be an institution in your industry and still be nearly invisible online.
At Alliance, we see this all the time. A founder has built a successful business through referrals, repeat clients, and word of mouth. Their expertise comes through naturally during client meetings, strategy sessions, and sales conversations. Existing clients know why they’re irreplaceable and when to bring them in. But when someone searches online for the exact problem that business solves, it doesn’t even appear on their google search. This is because their expertise is not demonstrated in their content.
This is one of the biggest authority gaps we see. Existing relationships are built on experience but that doesn’t always translate to discoverability. If your best thinking only exists in the work you deliver, your clients will be happy but prospective clients won’t have the opportunity to find you. This is why blogging still matters.
In the days of SEO optimization, Google preferred blogs over other types of content. While that’s no longer the case, blogging is just as important because now, it gives your expertise somewhere to live where the people looking for it can actually find it.
Now the quality of your blog matters more than ever. You can no longer just generate empty content for visibility. Your blog has to create immediate value, establish your authority, and instill prospective buyers with trust in your expertise and your ability to deliver.
Search Has Changed, But Expertise Still Wins
There was a time when success largely came down to publishing frequently, targeting specific keywords, and keeping your website active. While those tactics still have a place, they are no longer what separates valuable content from everything else online.
Today, people discover businesses through traditional search results, AI-generated overviews, and increasingly through conversations with AI tools that synthesize information from across the web. Search engines have become much better at identifying content that addresses real pain points and reads with authority instead of empty content created simply to capture traffic.
Keywords still tell readers that you’re speaking to their needs, but they should no longer dictate what you write. A much better approach now is to identify one of your audience’s problems, use your expertise to recommend a solution, and then write an article that’s packed with content and delivers real solutions.
Compare these two articles:
One is titled: Five Tips for Succession Planning.
The other: Why Succession Plans Stall After the Founder Agrees to Step Back.
The first summarizes information that already exists in hundreds of places and likely does it in a 2016-style numbered list. The second is a thought-piece that speaks to years of experience watching the same pattern unfold and creatively finding solutions around it. That’s the kind of content people are searching for now. AI searches pick it up because it offers value right in the title, and readers share and remember it because it teaches them something they couldn’t have learned anywhere else.
Turn Your Inner Dialogue into Your Next Blog Post
Coming up with topics to write about is generally not the bottleneck. Most founders have ideas coming out of their ears, but as soon as they sit down to write a blog post, they go blank. So they look outside of themselves for topics: What do other companies write about? What’s trending right now?
If you have a hot take on a trending topic, I’m sure your readers will find it valuable. But most great content comes from founders simply drawing inspiration from their day-to-day workflow. The best material for a post is the response you always give to the question clients ask during every sales call, the misconceptions you correct over and over again when you’re at a conference, the difficult decisions you help your employees navigate, and the stories you find yourself telling clients that instantly make a complex idea click.
Those small daily moments contain years of accumulated experience that your audience is looking for. When you build your content around those conversations, your articles naturally become more valuable. And better yet, they write themselves. Instead of asking yourself what you should write about next, ask “What do I hear myself saying to my clients in every call?”
Traffic is Only the Beginning
Ranking well in search results is valuable, but it isn’t the outcome that will generate interest, and eventually leads, for your business. You can get a hundred likes and shares on your post, but they might not convert a single new client.
Authority is built when your perspective helps your reader see a common problem in a light they never have before. They read another piece, explore your website, and begin to see that you keep proving your legitimacy and experience at every turn. By the time they reach out, they already trust you as the expert they need and are ready for you to take the lead.
This is why blogs still matter in the age of AI. They allow people outside your existing network to experience your expertise long before the first meeting. And a well-written and original post stands out among your competition’s AI slop.
