Case Study: How to Translate a Career’s Worth of Experience Into a Compelling Business Book

Kate Vawter had spent years building a successful consulting business and developing ideas she knew could help more people. Writing a book felt like a natural next step for building her authority. But having enough expertise to write a book and knowing how to write a book are two very different skills.

Kate had years of ideas, stories, lessons, and experience to draw from. The challenge was deciding what belonged in the book, how those ideas fit together, and which insights would actually matter to the people she wanted to reach.

She knew that writing a business book can take up a significant investment of time. A founder can spend a year or two drafting a manuscript only to discover that they chose the wrong angle or wrote a book that doesn’t support what they ultimately want to become known for. Kate wanted to avoid that. She wanted to turn what she had learned over the course of her career into a book that was useful to readers and strategically valuable to her business.

That was when she started looking for help.

The Challenge: Turn Expertise Into a Book

Kate knew she had more than enough experience to fill a book. The harder part was turning years of ideas, stories, and lessons into something a reader could easily follow and use. She needed to determine which parts of her experience belonged in the book, how to organize those ideas around the problems her audience actually cared about, and how to turn what had become instinctive to her into insights that would feel valuable to someone encountering them for the first time. Rather than spending months trying to figure that out on her own, Kate began looking for someone who could help her shape the book before she started writing it.

Our partnership started when Kate scheduled a “Book Strategy Meeting” with us. In that meeting, we had an in-depth discussion defining and understanding her audience, the problems they face, and how she could help. We also created an outline of chapter topics together, which immediately gave her a framework to begin organizing her ideas.

“What I thought might be a one-time brainstorm turned into one of the best investments I’ve made.” Kate said in her testimonial, “That first session was not only productive, it lit a fire under me to finally write the book I’d been dreaming about.”

The Solution: Audience-Focused Writing

In this first strategy meeting, it was immediately obvious Kate had experience her audience could benefit from. What she didn’t have was an understanding of how to organize her thoughts into an asset that built her authority and created value for her readers. That is where Alliance could help.

Step 1: Research the Audience

Since Kate’s goal was speaking, we wanted to organize her book around what her audience was hungry to hear. Instead of starting with Kate’s totality of knowledge and trying to whittle it down to something her audience would find interesting, we started our work by diving into the needs of her audience. What were their common pain points? Where were they confused and struggling and in need of guidance?

If Kate wanted to offer leadership coaching, we needed to view Kate’s expertise through the lens of her readers’ needs. This meant understanding where there were gaps in existing leadership advice and what insights Kate had that gave her a unique and valuable perspective. By the end of this phase, we knew exactly who the book was for, what problems it would solve, and how Kate’s expertise led that conversation.

Step 2: Extract Expertise

Once we understood Kate’s audience and what they needed from the book, we began extracting the expertise she had developed throughout her career. Through detailed outlining and interviews, we gave Kate the space to talk through her ideas, frameworks, client experiences, and stories while we asked questions designed to uncover the depth behind them.

Kate already knew what she wanted to teach. Our role was to help translate that knowledge into a book. We identified the insights that would be most valuable to her readers, determined where they belonged within the larger argument, and matched them with the stories and examples that would bring those ideas to life. By the end of the process, the expertise was still distinctly Kate’s, but it had a structure that made it easier for someone else to understand and apply.

Step 3: Draft and Refine

Over the course of our six-month collaboration, we had weekly strategy sessions, outlined her book and refined her ideas. We interviewed and recorded Kate to capture her voice and her manner of speaking. When drafting the manuscript, we wrote in a way that would represent her ideas, resonate with her audience, and sound just like Kate. As we wrote the manuscript, she went through the book chapter by chapter to clarify her ideas and refine the voice to make sure it represented her ideas well.

Our structured process removed the uncertainty that keeps many experts from finishing a book. “Danielle made the entire experience approachable and joyful. She took the guesswork out of writing and gave me the clarity, support, and structure I needed to finish a book I’m genuinely proud of.”

As Kate recounted the experience of working together she added, “Danielle became my thought partner, writing collaborator, and secret weapon as I created Better Boss Blueprint, my first full-length manuscript. Her process is clear, structured, and truly brilliant. We moved from big-picture strategy to detailed chapter outlines, then filled in the stories, research, and insights that brought the book to life. Weekly sessions with her were fun, focused, and deeply energizing. I always left our meetings feeling like a real author.”

The Results: A Bestseller!

The book became a bestseller in the first six months that it launched and generated new consulting clients during that time. In Kate’s words, “Writing this book gave me a lifelong asset that generates revenue, fuels my content, opens doors with new clients, and frankly — people just love talking about it.”

The book established Kate as an authority in leadership coaching and helped her pivot towards speaking and coaching opportunities. She also saw the effect of her book ripple across its readers. As she recalled, “I expected the hard part to be writing the book. What surprised me was how naturally it all came together, and that readers would finish it and make bold career moves because of it.”
